Our History
Light Of The World Church of God in Christ was founded and organized on September l0th, 1965 by Pastor William A. Smith (later to become Superintendent William A. Smith) and Sister Roxie Lee Smith (later to become Mother Roxie Lee Smith).
The first service was held in a small one room store-front building at 535 West Rosecrans Ave, Compton California. The first members were Pastor W. A. Smith, Sister Roxie Lee Smith, Brother T.J. Shrock, Sister Allie M. Davis, Mother Jewelean Jackson, Mother Mozelle McEwing and the ten children of Pastor and Sister Smith.
We soon outgrew the small store-front church. In 1966, only one year later, Pastor Smith moved the church to our present location, which is 113 East Rosecrans Avenue, Compton, California.
God has continued to meet our needs through difficult times. Superintendent Smith was determined to press toward the vision God had given him. God blessed Superintendent Smith and others to remodel and beautify this edifice as it stands today. Through the process of building, young men were taught by Superintendent Smith to build and some have made a living doing so. For years he had a dream of acquiring an adequate parking facility for his congregation and visitors. Again, with his faith, God Blessed.
God has blessed Light of the World to be one of the oldest churches in Compton, California. We have been serving and praising God for 51 years. The Lord called Superintendent Smith home on September 26, 2016. We are currently in transition of a new Pastor and we believe God will bless us with a great pastor that will lead us for another 51 years.
Supt. Smith is known for his old-time gospel songs and old-time gospel preaching. He is especially known for showing love to anyone that ever encountered him. One of his favorite songs was "Let's show some love".Superintendent Smith’s goal was to have Light of the World Church of God in Christ in existence until the end of time.
